The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess
Aurora Fox Arts Center
9900 E. Colfax Avenue Aurora
George and Ira Gershwin's Porgy & Bess debuted in 1935 as a groundbreaking opera starring a cast composed entirely of classically trained African-American singers performing the classical, jazz and folk music. Now, the stirring tale of African-American life in South Carolina's fictional Catfish Row comes to the Aurora Fox Arts Center. The story follows the crippled Porgy as he sets out to rescue Bess from Crown, her violent and possessive lover, and Sportin' Life, a drug dealer. Porgy & Bess includes the classic songs "Summertime," "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'" and "Bess, You Is My Woman Now," and will transport you back to the 1930s with its joyous tale of love and life.
